She could already hear the yells of her parents coming from the house as she stepped from her car and slammed the door behind her. Her first day at college wasn’t bad, but coming home to her parents was what ruined the day.
Lorraine looked around at the drab place where they lived. Junk laid everywhere as she made her way up to the front door to the house that was falling apart. And even the inside was an eye sore.
She opened the door and stepped inside as a beer can came flying across the room at her. Lorraine jumped out of the way causing it to crash into the door as Jake stormed toward her. She rolled her eyes as Doris came from their bedroom and folded her arms across her middle, glaring at her daughter. No asking her how her day was or if she was going to work that night; no wondering if she had already met a nice boy or if she had been asked out on her first day. Jake didn’t come up and smile as he asked if she enjoyed college so far or say how he was proud of her for wanting to become a nurse; to help people.
No sign of love coming from either of them. But she wasn’t surprised, just it hurt a little to see them being so calloused...well, maybe it hurt a lot.
“Where have you been, young lady?” Jake shouted at her as he stooped over her, his eyes red around the rims from already being high on alcohol.
Lorraine held back all the crud remarks that she had playing in her mind as she looked up at him. “I came straight home from school and I need to get ready to go to work. I don’t want to be late.”
Jake laughed as he pointed to her, looking back at Doris. “School, she says?” He turned back to her as Doris grabbed a beer can and went back to their room, leaving the two alone, the bedroom door slamming shut.
“You don’t have enough brains to still be in school,” He finished his sentenced with a few of his favorite cuss words thrown in her face.
Lorraine huffed, taking a step forward as she glared up at Jake’s ugly face. “You know, Dad, I am smart! I'm not completely stupid!”
Jake smirked before he flung his hand back and slapped her across her face, causing her to stumble back against the door. With another laugh, Jake turned around and headed toward their bedroom, yelling for Doris.
Lorraine rubbed the burning on her cheek as she felt tears stinging her eyes. Her eye lids fell closed as she slid down the door to the floor. Her cell phone sounded off as a text message came in. Lorraine pulled her phone out and opened up the message from Jessica.
“Hey, girl. Ain’t that Zaydan a nice hunk of a guy?”
Lorraine looked up as William’s eyes flashed through her mind, seeing them looking down at her with such kindness.
She hit reply. “Can I come over? I want 2 spend the night at ur place. I can’t take him tonight.” Jessica was always willing to let her stay with her when she needed it.
Lorraine sighed as she leaned her head back and let the tears shake her. There was no one in her life that ever showed her any love. Jessica didn’t really show her love, it was more like rough kindness. She heard Doris scream as she hit the floor, Jake yelling at her at the top of his lungs. Lorraine gritted her teeth as she stood up and walked outside for a few minutes before going in to get some things for the night.
She gritted her teeth as she gripped her head with her hands, the loud voices from the house causing her anger to rise. In irritation her steps moved about quickly, not sure of where they were going. With a grunt of anger she dropped her hands and kicked the nearest thing, sending a loud bang through the yard. Lorraine turned back and glared at the house, her hate growing. After a few seconds of listening to the loud voices she decided not to go back in but to head straight to work. And everything that she needed for work was in her car, including her clothes.
I can always borrow some of Jessica’s things for tonight....
